Swimming Victoria Open Long Course Championships 2021

February 26, 2021

A large team of 18 swimmers represented the Club at the Championships.

The Victorian Open LC Championships may have looked a little different this year, but that didn’t stop 363 athletes from 48 clubs putting on a show at MSAC.

The athletes embraced the revised timed finals program and we saw some outstanding swimming over two huge days of competition.

A large team of 18 swimmers represented the Club at the Championships.

The week started with a lockdown, and the uncertainty of whether the event could take place. In the end, lockdown lifted, and Swimming Victoria’s ‘Plan A’ was implemented with a shorter program of timed finals and no relays. Let’s face it – it was a tough week of interrupted training, and COVID playing mind games with us. All credit to our swimmers for achieving their qualifying times, taking to the pool with gusto, and making us proud. It was also great to see many of our newest members take to the pool.

We had a number of swimmers placing top 10:

Baden Coxsedge 50BR, 100BR; Justin Griggs 50FL; Dominique Hart 800FR; Liam Laidlaw 50FR; Nick Layton 100FL; Will Middleton 200FL, 200IM; Ray Oo 100FR; Adam Selwood 100BR; Lushavel Stickland 100BK, 50FR; Luka Zubcic 50FR, 100FR, 200FR

The following were our medallists:

Luka Zubcic: Bronze 50FL, Bronze 100FL

Robbe Dilissen: Bronze 800FR

Ray Oo: Bronze 50FR

Adam Selwood: Bronze 200BR

Lushavel Stickland: Bronze 50BK

In further amazing news, our women's team placed 12th, our men's team placed 4th, making our combined club placing 7th overall.

Looking at these results with perspective – our swimmers have had a disrupted, interrupted, and lengthy stressful period during the short, medium and long term. They have not only managed to achieve their qualifying times, but some also PB’d, many made top 10s (which, in the ordinary course of things, would have qualified them for finals), and several medalled.

Credit goes to their strength of character and dedication, coupled with their amazing coaches and support team at the club. Putting together the revised meet with such a short time frame was a massive effort and we should also acknowledge Swimming Victoria’s efforts in making this happen. Finally, and by no means least, credit goes to our swimmers’ families, and also to our volunteer time-keepers. It takes a village!
